Laura Gemmell

Laura Gemmell is the Founder and Technical CEO of Taught by Humans. She believes the future of work is always learning – both learning AI and data skills, and using AI to make learning itself more effective. The Taught by Humans platform brings these two strands together. It helps organisations build safe, compliant, and applied AI and data capability, while also using AI to power personalised learning experiences. Employees complete essentials such as onboarding, industry knowledge, and compliance learning, but also gain access to AI-enabled tools that create tailored content, act as coaches, and support real work – from proposals to reporting. Laura holds a PhD in AI Education for the Public from the University of Bristol and UWE, completed in 2017 when few outside research were even discussing AI. Her research explored how people and businesses can learn about AI, its impact on jobs, and the skills needed for the future. Before founding Taught by Humans, she spent more than a decade in tech and data: working on the News International phone hacking scandal at PwC, launching mobile payments at Worldpay, and heading fraud data science at Monzo. She has also worked with ambitious start-ups, applying her technical and product expertise to help them grow. Alongside industry, Laura has taught thousands of people to code and build data skills through organisations including Code First: Girls, the University of Bristol, Ada the National Digital College, Makers Academy, and Decoded. She also holds a higher education teaching qualification. Referred to as the “money saving expert of AI”, Laura is recognised for showing where AI adds value, where it doesn’t, and how to use it to save time, money, and effort.
